DEER CREEK, MINNESOTA

By Bonnie Zeise Brown

Deer Creek, Minnesota. Scrapbook Vol 1

This magazine is a recovery/replacement of an old scrapbook donated by the Thrall family of Deer Creek, MN, to the Deer Creek Museum. The original scrapbook, 11wx14h in size, was being lost. The pages were slowly breaking apart. The Thrall family carefully removed their cherished photos and articles and generously donated the remainder to the Deer Creek Museum. The remaining photos and articles, which start with dates from the early 1900s --consisting of weddings, obituaries, local news, etc.,-- were scanned in, and the original pages were placed in archival protectors and stored. This is the original scrapbook's replacement. If you're in the Deer Creek area, this can be viewed at the Deer Creek Museum!

Growing Up Finnish

This short and sweet memoir describes the everyday life of a young Finnish girl growing up on her grandparent’s farm in the 1930s. It is easy to read and is illustrated with original watercolor artwork by the author. Filled with daily-life pieces that sometimes have unsuspecting history lessons thrown in, there are subjects like ‘The Sauna’, ‘The Chicken House’, ‘Harvest Time’, and ‘The Summer Kitchen’ to name a few.

Booklovers of every age will enjoy this quick read. Those who grew up on a farm will appreciate reading this for the memories. Those who did not have a farm-life, will experience what it was like! Children will learn about “the olden days” when their ancestors grew up and they will also be taken with the artwork. Although it is called Growing Up Finnish, many nationalities in the region would have grown up in a similar way, so this book is for everyone!
